The tissue atlas page shows the RNA expression and the antibody staining/knowledge-based protein expression profile in 44 different normal human tissues, further described under Assays & annotation.

This page starts with a summary, which gives an overview of the RNA tissue category for the specific gene, a list of which protein classes the gene belongs to and a summary of the overall protein expression pattern across the analyzed normal tissue cell types. Further information about the predicted localization of the protein, protein evidence, and data reliability are also found in this section. Currently, not all genes have been analyzed by knowledge-based annotation, indicated by "Pending RNA-based expert annotation" under "Data reliability description", when applicable. The antibody staining pattern is described in the "Protein expression" field in such cases. The summary data can be based on one or more antibodies (reported by the "Antibodies in assay"-field at the bottom of this page).

In addition, there are genes analyzed with a knowledge-based approach where available RNA-Seq and gene/protein characterization data has been evaluated as not sufficient in combination with IHC to yield a knowledge-based expression profile. This is indicated by the comment "RNA-based expert annotation could not be performed" in the "Protein expression" field. Additional comments on RNA expression or antibody staining are included in relevant cases.

Below the summary, a selection of tissues is displayed as representative of the overall staining pattern. From left: liver, colon, kidney, testis, lymph node and cerebral cortex. In relevant cases, an additional 7th image can be added as a complement.

Further down, a table overview of the internally generated RNA-Seq data and corresponding antibody staining/protein expression are listed for each analyzed tissue. The RNA tissue profile is shown to the left, with purple bars representing the relative FPKM value. Further information can be found in the more detailed description of the RNA-Seq analysis.

In the table, the analyzed tissues are organized in tissue groups according to functional features or anatomical location. The protein profile is shown to the right, with blue bars summarizing the expression pattern of the specific protein provided by the antibody/antibodies tested. The protein expression bars represent the intensity and fraction of the positive cell types annotated in each organ. For proteins where the antibody staining pattern has been analyzed by knowledge-based annotation, the summary and the protein profile are based on a best estimate of the "true" protein expression, described more in detail under Assays & annotation. For genes that are pending this extended review, the staining profile of the used antibody/antibodies is the result shown and summarized. For genes for which a knowledge-based annotation could not be performed, bars for protein expression are not shown, but all annotation data on antibody staining is available under Primary data.

The original images and annotations can be accessed by clicking on the tissue name or protein expression bar. In a few cases antibodies targeting proteins from multiple genes are used, this is marked with a specific sentence: "Caution: based on antibodies targeting proteins from multiple genes".
